Beginning Strings is a year-long course that is available for grade 6. First-year instruction in strings (violin, viola, cello and bass) includes correct holding position, bow grip, selected major and minor scales and rhythm studies. Appropriate use of musical, dynamic markings, and the parts and care of stringed instruments are emphasized. Students prepare a number of concert selections that are performed for an audience. Students should anticipate some after-school practice and evening performances.
No prior musical experience is needed.
Students are asked to provide their own instrument...but...if that is not possible please contact the teacher and we will work with you...we have some instruments that we can loan to students.
Information about purchasing and/or renting an instrument will be provided in August...both at the IMPS camp and at an evening informational session for parents. Please do not worry about obtaining an instrument until then. Parent information meeting is Wednesday, August 30th at 6 p.m. in the West Cary Auditorium.
String Orchestra is a year-long course that is a combined class for Intermediate and Advanced Strings. It is available for any student, any grade, who has previous experience playing a string instrument.
The class continues technique and scale studies, introduced in Beginning Strings, are continued. Solo and orchestral literature is studied. Emphasis is on varied bowings, tuning, identifying and playing various dynamic markings and learning basic musical terms. At this level students continue to master scales and technique. Extended ranges, shifting and further study of good intonation are emphasized, along with in-depth study of style and interpretation. Students are encouraged to perform on an individual basis and participate in small ensembles as well as the full ensemble.
The String Orchestra performs at a variety of events throughout the year such as the Western Wake Orchestra Festival, the Durham Bulls, school events and evening concerts...therefore students should anticipate some after-school practices and evening performances.
String Orchestra members are asked to purchase a West Cary Orchestra polo shirt which will be worn for some performances...and have the option of purchasing a West Cary Fine Arts sweatshirt.
